Unit 1. Community Mobilisation
bringing together a diverse range of actors to collaboratively address shared concerns
Unit 1. Community Mobilisation
Community mobilisation is about bringing together a diverse range of actors who should be involved in assessing and responding to climate, peace and security issues in a particular area.
There are many ways to approach climate change adaptation. Governmental policies, large-scale infrastructure and technical solutions may mitigate some concerns, but are unlikely to fully address climate-related risks and conflict drivers at various scales. Through Locally Led Action on Climate, Peace and Security, individuals, groups and institutions collaboratively address shared concerns. Meaningful participation can support more robust, sustainable interventions that holistically address root causes. However, collective action requires a greater investment of time and resources, coupled with a high degree of adaptability and coordination.
Module 1.1 provides an introduction to the Locally Led Action on Climate, Peace and Security framework. In Module 1.2, best practices for identifying and mobilising local partners are introduced. Module 1.3 discusses facilitation techniques that may be useful throughout a locally led action project.

Concepts, tools, and participatory methods discussed in Unit 1 include:

The three modules of Unit 1 will help users:
- identify advantages and potential challenges of participatory approaches
- gain familiarity with the Locally Led Action for Climate, Peace and Security framework
- understand how participation can support peace positivity in climate resilience and adaptation
- appreciate the importance of identifying a wide range of actors to engage through participatory methods
- consider various strategies for relationship building in diverse communities
- ensure an inclusive, conflict-sensitive approach to participation
- facilitate participatory approaches to project management in a variety of contexts
- set the tone for productive collaboration through expectation and conflict management
- explore a range of teambuilding and group engagement activities

The overall purpose of Unit 1 is to prepare facilitators for gathering and supporting a diverse range of actors who will collaboratively analyse and address risks related to climate, peace and security.
